# Bounded Buffer Problem

The Bounded Buffer problem, also known as the Producer-Consumer problem, is a classic example of a multi-process synchronization problem. The problem describes two processes, the producer and the consumer, who share a common, fixed-size buffer used as a queue.

1. **Producer**: It generates an item and puts it into the buffer. If the buffer is full, the producer must wait for the consumer to consume an item.

### Race Condition:

    * Both producer and consumer read the `counter` simultaneously.
        
    * The producer sees the `counter` is less than `BUFFER_SIZE` and decides to add an item. At the same time, the consumer sees the `counter` is more than 0 and decides to remove an item.
        
    * Both try to update the `counter` and the buffer (`in` and `out` pointers) concurrently.
        
    * This could lead to two types of issues:
        
        * **Overlapping Writes**: The producer and consumer might overwrite each other's changes to the buffer or the `counter`.
            
        * **Invalid State**: The `counter` might end up with a value that does not accurately reflect the number of items in the buffer (e.g., it might become negative or exceed `BUFFER_SIZE`).
            

Without synchronization, the integrity of the shared data is compromised, leading to unpredictable and incorrect outcomes in the program. In real-world applications, this would necessitate the use of synchronization mechanisms like mutexes, semaphores, or condition variables to avoid such race conditions.

To solve the Bounded Buffer (or Producer-Consumer) problem safely, we use synchronization mechanisms like semaphores and a mutex. In this context:

1. **Semaphores**: We use two counting semaphores, `full` and `empty`.
    
    * `full` counts the number of items in the buffer (initially 0).
        
    * `empty` counts the number of empty slots in the buffer (initially equal to the buffer size).
        
2. **Mutex**: This is a binary semaphore used to ensure mutual exclusion when accessing and modifying shared resources (like the buffer, `in`, and `out` variables). It protects the critical section where the shared memory is accessed.

2. **Lock Mutex**: Once an item is confirmed, the consumer locks the mutex to enter the critical section, ensuring exclusive access to the buffer.
    
3. **Remove Item from Buffer**: The consumer takes an item from the buffer and updates the `out` pointer.
    
4. **Unlock Mutex**: The consumer then releases the mutex, allowing other processes (like the producer) to enter their critical sections.
